Magnetic
Susceptibility |
| |
Abstract.
Magnetic interactions may lead to errors in mass measurements
of high accuracy. Requirements of magnetic susceptibility
and permanent magnetization on the mass standards (weights)
have been included in the new draft of OIML R111. Measurement
methods and instruments for characterizing these magnetic
properties of the weights have been developed as well. The
BIPM susceptometer has been adopted by a number of primary
laboratories with responsibility for mass standards. We report
a comparison of susceptibility results by three different
laboratories using this instrument. Top |

Thermometers |

Abstract. Henry Troemner
LLC has assembled a temperature calibration laboratory for
the calibration of standard platinum thermometers (SPRT’s).
Calibrations are performed using thermometric fixed-points
to realize the International Temperature Scale of 1990 over
the range 83.8058 K to 933.473 K. These realizations offer
the chance to discuss realization techniques necessary to
maintain reproducibility and stability of the fixed-points. Top

| Pipette Calibration
Certainty |
| |
Abstract. The calibration
of pipettes requires a high degree of skill and knowledge
of the sources of error that can obscure the true volume of
liquid delivered from a pipette. Much has been written concerning
the errors associated with using air displacement pipettes.
The same errors that contribute to the uncertainty of volumes
of liquid delivered by pipettes operated by laboratory personnel
must be identified and managed by pipette calibrators. Unless
the variables are tightly controlled, it is difficult to determine
if measured volumes of liquid from the pipette being calibrated
are outside of accuracy limits or due to systematic errors
in the calibration system.
The preparation of uncertainty budgets for the calibration
process provides estimates of uncertainty associated with
the values generated by the measurement system. The uncertainty
estimates quantify the quality or accuracy of the calibrations.
Error budgets are presented for both calibration systems.
Details are provided on developing the gravimetric error budget.Top

| Determining the
Magnetic Properties of 1 kg Mass Standards |
| |
Abstract. Magnetic interactions
may lead to errors in precision mass metrology. An analytical
description of such magnetic errors is presented in which
the roles of both the volume magnetic susceptibility and permanent
magnetization are discussed. The same formalism is then used
to describe in detail the calibration and operation of a susceptometer
developed at the International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM).
The device has been optimize for the determination of the
magnetic properties of 1 kg mass standards.Top

| Advantages of
Using Alloy 8 Stainless Steel Weights |
| |
Abstract. The
revised ASTM and OIML weight specifications have placed more
stringent magnetic property requirements on weights. Troemner’s
new Alloy 8 Stainless Steel has extremely low magnetic properties
which exceed the requirements of ASTM E617 and OIML R111 in
addition to having more consistent density, and being a harder
material than materials used by other manufacturers.Top

| Determining Weight Calibration Intervals |
|
| |
|
| Abstract. Determining the calibration interval requires examination of the weight over time and the process for using the weight. Every detail on how the weight is handled and stored should be documented. The first step is to document the surface of the weight. Changes in the weight value could be associated with excessive wear or abuse of the weight. Examination of the weight should be done periodically or at a minimum before each calibration. The weight should be stored in the original case and protected from air borne contaminates. Excessive scratching of the weight must be prevented, as weight can be lost or gained. Excessive scratches can be caused by dragging the weight along the balance pan or by placing the unprotected weight on a hard surface or dirty surface. Top |

TROEMNER'S NATURAL FACTS

The Hummingbird is the world’s smallest bird. A typical Ruby Throated Hummingbird has a Mass of about 3g and a Length of about 8.5cm (3.5”) from tip of its beak to the tip of its tail.
